Noel Johansen has a likable face.
At least that’s what the United States Customs officers frequently tell the American-Canadian actor born in Montreal (with a citizenship in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada) during his global travels between various performances on television, film and the stage.
Pastor, bodyguard, pilot, account, attorney, British military officer – Noel Johansen is never sure whose professional shoes he might be stepping into next, or where those shoes might take him. From period drama to contemporary tales and even the occasional Sci-Fi jaunt, the Montreal-born stage and screen actor has amassed a wealth of experience portraying a variety of characters and in a host of genres. Currently he is helping tell a down to earth story with a somewhat unusual twist in ABC’s Somewhere Between. He plays Danny Jackson, a prison inmate convicted of killing three women, including his brother’s fiancée, and who is awaiting execution by lethal injection. As if Danny’s life is not complicated enough, he also suffers from a genetic/physical disorder known as deletion syndrome. The prospect of stepping into these particular shoes was, not surprisingly, daunting as well as compelling for Johansen.
Getting a chance to learn more about the person behind the character is always a delight and even more so when it is someone like Noel Johansen, who shares more than just a glimpse into the man behind than man seen on screen – he gives a peek into his soul.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about Somewhere Between and your character Danny Jackson?
Noel Johansen: Yeah, for sure! It’s kind of a thriller. It’s described as a one hour drama about destiny and fate. It’s a thriller about family and the incredible drama that can occur within a family. There is a lot of action in it too. I’m trying to describe it without revealing anything, but I would describe it as a thriller that involves some intense stuff between family. It’s very edgy and that makes it really exciting. There’s a lot of twists and turns and that makes it really exciting.
Let's talk about Somewhere Between - what was the audition process like?
It involved several rounds of auditions, and was unlike anything I had experienced, mainly due to how the character I played, Danny, who "overtook" me from the moment I read the audition script. I hadn't really experienced that as strongly before, as I usually explore the character and play with different versions of them. But when I first received the audition, even though I wasn't sure I could play the role, having not done anything like that before...
Noel Johansen is one actor to keep your eye on. This summer, he’ll star in the highly anticipated ABC thriller, Somewhere Between. He shines in one of his most challenging and rewarding roles to date. Pop-Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with him ahead of tonight’s premiere.
ABC’s new summer thriller, Somewhere Between, follows Laura Price (Paula Patton) a news reporter in San Francisco as she tries to change the fate of her young daughter.
Working alongside Price is Nico Jackson (Devon Sawa), a cop-turned private investigator. Somewhere Between also stars Noel Johansen, who plays Nico’s mentally challenged brother, Danny.
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN – “For One to Live” – “Somewhere Between,” a suspenseful thriller, stars Paula Patton (“Warcraft”) as Laura Price, a local news producer in San Francisco helping the police to hunt down a serial killer. After the killer strikes close to home, a twist of fate allows a “Groundhog Day”-type reset, and Laura relives the week prior to the string of murders. Unlike “Groundhog Day,” she only has one chance. Can she change fate and stop the killer? As she unravels the mysterious connection between herself and the killer, she realizes that fate is written in stone and that changing events will require an ultimate sacrifice. “Somewhere Between” will make its series premiere with the episode “For One to Live” on MONDAY, JULY 24 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on The ABC Television Network. With the new drama “Somewhere Between” set to premiere tonight on ABC, series star Noel Johansen is prepared for how viewers will respond, good or bad, to his portrayal of Danny, a young father navigating life with deletion syndrome. Deletion syndrome, also known as DiGeorge syndrome, is a disorder that affects both the mind and the body with symptoms ranging from developmental delay to congenital heart problems.
We recently sat down with Johansen to discuss if he had reservations taking on the role, how he fully inhabited Danny even when the cameras weren’t rolling, and why the “Supernatural” fandom can’t forget about that one time he was beheaded.
